FAQ - Stuart Benchtop Science Equipment Featuring BioCote®

Q. What should I use to de-scale a Merit water still?

A. A proprietary brand of kettle de-scaler or a weak organic acid such as formic or citric acids. Aquatron and Distinction stills have glass sheathed elements and so can be de-scaled quickly using dilute hydrochloric acid according to instructions.

Q. Why is the distilled water from my water still acidic?

A. The low pH is caused by the presence of dissolved carbon dioxide forming a weak solution of carbonic acid. This usually has no effect in general use but, if necessary, can be removed by boiling the water. Care must then be taken to protect the water from contact with the air as it cools or the carbon dioxide will quickly re-dissolve. For further information please email equipment@bibby-sterilin.com.

Q. Are there Stuart equipment items available for use on electrical supplies other than 230V, 50Hz?

A. Yes, many products are available in variants to operate on different electrical supplies. As part of the Dynalab catalog number you will see the voltage and hertz (i.e. SRT6/120V/60). Please contact Dynalab's Sales Office for information relating to any specific product. Tel: 585-334-2060 x114 Fax: 585-334-0241 E-mail: labinfo@dyna-labware.com.

Q. What is a 'secondary safety thermostat'  found on many pieces of Stuart equipment?

A. It is a completely independent control system that is set by the user to a few degrees above their working temperature. In the unlikely event of a fault in the main temperature control, the secondary safety thermostat will take over protecting both the instrument and samples.

Q Can I use more than one tube holder on my Stuart rotator?

Yes, you can fit any two tube holders, using the new adapter, catalogue number SB3/DUAL (although you cannot use two culture tube racks together).

Q: Are spare securing bars available for my SI50 shaker incubator?

Yes, spare bars are available, catalogue number RS150.

Q: Will the new aluminium blocks fit my old Stuart block heater?

Yes, they will fit the old Stuart block heaters.

Q: Can I use the new rockers tier system with my old Stuart STR9 rocker?

The new tier system uses strong magnets to hold it in place on the new rockers platform, which are constructed from steel. The old rocker platform is constructed from aluminium, so it will not hold the magnets or new tier system in place.

Q: Why is the heating element inside the Stuart water baths rather than underneath?

Internal heating elements give extremely fast warm up and very accurate control because the heater sensor can react much quicker to changes in temperature.

Q: I am concerned about flammable liquids catching fire in my heating mantle. Is there a safer version available?

The Barloworld Scientific range of Quickfit® heating mantles are made from a fire resistant plastic that will not catch fire.
